What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

The name implies that transponders send out an encoded signal that contains a four-digit number code when it is being questioned by air traffic control. This signal, referred to as a SQUAWK Code is used to locate aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to send an exact message to the air traffic control system in the event of an emergency or to notify controllers of changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are often used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot cannot communicate via radio. They are very important for safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar queries by displaying an identifier. This enables ATC to locate the aircraft on a busy radar screen. Transponders have several different modes that differ in how they respond to interrogation. Mode A only transmits the code and mode C provides altitude data. Mode S transponders send more detailed information like callsigns as well as position. This is useful when flying in crowded airspace.

A PIN code is a collection of numbers (usually between four and six digits) that are used to access a device or system. PIN codes are used to secure ATM and transactions at POS[1], secure access control (doors computers, cars),[2] and internet transactions.



Even though a longer password might seem more secure than a shorter one, it's possible to hack or guess even a four-digit PIN. To provide greater security, it is recommended that PINs be at least 6 digits in length and contain both numbers and letters. Some OEMs also require PIN codes for aftermarket key programmer, as a security measure to stop unauthorised persons from harvesting data from the modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers can be used to identify cars and provide a wealth information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on earth, except for alien cars (or whatever). The 17 digits of a VIN code are a mixture of numbers and letters that can be decoded to reveal crucial information about your vehicle or truck.

Modern cars are loaded with a vast amount of information about their history and features and functions as digital libraries on the move. The key to accessing this information is the VIN number. This permits you to determine everything from if your vehicle was subject to recalls, to how many owners it has.

A VIN number is comprised of various sections, each of which contains a specific piece of information. The first digit, for instance is the type of vehicle the car is, for example, an automobile for passengers, a pickup truck or SUV. The second digit is the manufacturer. The third digit describes the car's assembly division, and the fourth through eighth digits define the model type, the type of restraint system body type, transmission and engine codes. The ninth digit acts as a check number to ensure that there is no fraud. It ensures that the VIN has not been altered.

In North America, the 10th through 17th digits of the VIN code are called the Vehicle Identification Section or VIS. The tenth digit is the year of manufacture, while the eleventh digit is a clue to the assembly plant that made the vehicle. In addition the tenth through seventeenth digits may contain additional information, like options or features that are installed in the vehicle.
